7 laps on Crox did the trick?
I am fairly new to honing and I have had some success to get a razor to shave well. So far I have mostly used the Norton 4000/8000. So, when I am honing on the 8000 side, I can barely get it to pass the HHT. I just did a “JaNorton” on my Boker Red Injun, and I got it to HHT 2 while honing on 8000. But when I did 7 laps on Crox, it went immediately to HHT4. That surprised me. Does anyone have a theory as to why that happened? Could it have been slightly overhoned, and then the spine-leading strokes on Crox would have corrected that?
So is this a proper progression: HHT 1-2 off the 8000, HHT 3-4 off Crox, then strop and shave? Or should I really work on the 8000 side until it gives me a solid HHT 4?
Thanks so much for this forum. Without all this knowledge-sharing, I would be nowhere.

This is terminology I got from the wiki:
HHT-0 - shave
The hair can be shaved immediately at the holding point. This is strictly spoken not a true HHT, but it does tell us that the edge is capable of shaving. [all other attempts must be made at least half an inch from the holding point]
HHT-1 - violin
The hair doesn't cut, but it "plays violin" with the edge. This is due to the shingles catching the edge, but it's not sharp enough to penetrate. On a full hollow razor, a faint ringing sound can be heard. On all razors it can be felt with the fingertips that hold the hair.
HHT-2 - split
When it is dragged across the edge, the edge catches the hair and splits it lengthwise.
HHT-3 - catch&pop
When it is dragged across the edge a bit, the edge catches the hair and pops it. The severed part will jump away.
HHT-4 - pop
The hair is popped immediately when it touches the edge. It still jumps away.
HHT-5 - silent slicer
The hair falls silently as soon as it touches the edge.

Evidently we need to go through the wiki and clean out the closet.
Forget the HHT altogether, the only real test is the shave test.It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Guess I'm going to have to take a new trip through the wiki. I kept seeing this terminology and was wondering where it came from. Thanks dutch!

I found the "JaNorton" thread very informative, and I saw that some participants used the HHT to tell others how sharp they had gotten their razor. I am new, so I am just copying this terminology.
I am also trying to develop the Thumb Pad Test but I have do not yet have a good enough feel for it to tell me when I can stop honing on the 8000 side.
A big challenge with honing is figuring out where you are at. If it is sharp enough to go to the next stage, so to speak.

Thanked: 1263You'll find alot of varying opinions on here about the old beloved HHT...lol. The bottom line though is the end result and the shave test. If you're new then of course your technique and skill level is going to come into play and vary that result as well. When honing I judge by using the TPT and the arm hair test. Of course the next question to ask you is if you have a razor thats been proffesionally honed that you can compare to?
