Default Honing a blade that has not been sharpened

I have a Widerstahl 5/8 and someone has utterly removed the edge. I have searched for, but cannot find any advice on how to start on such
a blade. Should I just use a 1000 stone and a great deal of patience or should I use the 220 for a few passes to begin to established the new
    edge?

    Thanks

If the edge is totally flat aka breadknifed, I'd start on the 220 with a few layers of tape to speed it up, when you have something starting to look like a bevel, remove all or all but one layer of tape and start setting a bevel as normal on your 1k stone.

If the edge is DEAD like Blix just said you might even want to start with a knife honing technique with the spine lifted to 45 degrees then 25 degrees then 3 layers of tape the either 1 layer or none

Do about 20-30 circles or strokes at each level and work the edge back in..

Remember you have to actually "Restore" the edge geometry before you can start "Honing" the razor

Whether bread knifed or what here's a link to Glen's video on bread knifing and includes restoring the bevel. It should help !!

Glen was typing as I was, but the vid is good!
