    Default Honing my Shears

Can i hone my hairdresser shears like i hone my razor? the lady that usually does them says she uses a hone. I have a Naniwa 3k 8k for razor honing. Additionally i want to know if I can use my pasted strop/ leather strop on the shears as well. I really see no reason why not....

    Thanks SRP Friends

The easy thing to do is to get a dedicated scissor sharpener. You can go free hand but it can be tricky. I've had luck sharpening at a 10:1 ratio, i.e. 10 forward strokes on the bevel followed by 1 light backstroke on the flat. Others may have better ways of doing it. This is just what has worked for me on the few pair I've sharpened.

So your just recommending that I continue using my current scissor sharpening person rather than try and manage myself?

Honestly, I only have a small sample size when it comes to sharpening scissors so take my recommendations with a grain of salt. I was just saying that doing something like this is always easier when you use tools specific for the job and there are plenty of sharpening systems available that work specifically for scissors. I'm sure that Lansky makes one and it is probably quality like their other products.

ive heard it said that some hair shears dont have flat bevels they have convex bevels making it harder to sharpen.
if you have flat bevels i'd say go ahead. i would only sharpen on the bevel side and not on the inside of the shears (you want the shears to be as close together as possible, so as to shear, correct?) you can try high grit stones, but may not need them. having a toothier edge may be a good thing. ymmv. let us know how it goes.

You could go further and say, never sharpen the inside of the shears. Picture the bevel's very edge as consisting of the two blades meeting, as opposed to a razor or knife's single blade bevel. Hope this makes sense and helps.
