Wonderedge revival?
Picked up a Wonderedge this weekend in pretty haggard condition. It had a mild frown in the edge that was pulled out well enough using 45deg. strokes on a Naniwa 1k. Afterwards, I used a piece of tape and went to work honing at 1k to set a new bevel. After the bevel was set, I went on to a full progression. Under magnification, the edge looks great...HHT fails, and shave test fails in the exact location of the frown. So what's up in this location? How can the location look completely shave-ready under 60x magnification but fail the other tests?
So what do you think I should do...drop back to 1k and bring the entire edge down a bit more or apply a little extra finger pressure in that area and drop back to 3k or 8k? I'm afraid that if I use the finger pressure, it'll start bringing that frown back, but by the same token, if I keep honing at 1k, it'll add more wear to the razor....

This man posted about a nice razor and didn't include pics??!! Heresy!!
'Sure sounds like the frown wasn't completely erased in the resto phase before the bevel set. Its bitten me more than a few times.
I've been using 2-3 layers of tape in the last steps of 45 deg butterknifing. Magic marker the edge after some strokes and take a very light stroke or two w/ a single layer of tape to see if the entire length bears on the stone.

How did you ascertain the bevel was set ? Visual cues are not always reliable & this is coming from a guy who uses a loupe religiously.
I'd suggest maybe the bevel is not quite there yet. You don't have to have great wear from re-honing & DON'T put finger pressure on the previous frowning area for obvious reasons.
It may even be better to not use tape if the spine is misshapen too.

Sheesh...you guys sure are photo hoes!
I ended up taking the darned thing completely apart again! Applied heat to each individual scale and flexed them into a straighter position and then repinned all three...came out better than my first effort. Taped the spine back up and went to work on the edge again. Actually, I think I was nearly there the first time. 50 strokes on the 1k and it was popping hairs all along the edge, then progressed up through 12k. It passes HHT all along the edge now and I'll give it a shave tonight!

Yeah, I'm using a loupe to get a good idea of the edge...looked great under the loupe, but not so much when it was done. I didn't use the finger method for the rehone...I generally only use this method as the last resort on a warped razor (which the Wonderedge was not).
