Default Tape Type for Blade Protection

What type of tape is best for protecting a blade during honing. I have picked up two Ebay cheapies (A Charlex (Charles Hake) and A Crown and Sword (germany)).

I have black insulating/electrical tape or sello tape, i think sellotape will be less gummy on the hone than the electrical tape.

I typically use electrical tape. Works fine and resists shredding/wearing from the hone better than most other tapes I've tried. Don't know what sellotape is though.

Sello tape is a clear tape for general use.

I will try the electrical tape thanks.

Electrical tape works very nicely, and the black residue left comes off the stone easily.

Electrical tape gums up the hone quickly but it's the lesser of all evils, so I use it anyways.

Well, i am pleased to report that following the advice from this site i now have one razor that i can shave with, although it only just passed the HHT!

I am pleased with my progression. I think when i have a proper strop rather than using my belt i will get better edges

I am currently using a product called painters tape made by 3M company. I order it here http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=5799 this I find works better than the electrical tape alternative because it does not leave a gummy residue. It is water soluable and will last about 15 to 20 passes on your hone before it starts to wear up. By then most common touch ups should be done any way but its no big deal to just add another piece of tape for those big hone jobs you might be doing. I'm sure if you look in any home improvement store you would find some sort of painters tape equivalent.

Yeah, but it's fairly expensive (comparatively speaking), and scotch tape will last 20 passes and washes off easily too. I use electrical tape for wedges, scotch for everything else. Wedges just take so many more passes.

Black electrical tape for me, on all razors, all the time, including the pasted strops.

    Just my two cents,
