I'm getting it! I'm getting it!
So happy about this I had to post a little "look at me" thread.
I was refreshing two of my razors tonight using coticule and then felt/leather strop. I've been using a straight since about Christmas time and my honing/stropping has gone from horrible to sometimes OK in that time. I have tried all the sharpness tests TNT TPT HHT and of course shave test. But the arm hair test seems to work best for me. I cut arm hair about 1/4 inch above the skin and the amount of tug I feel on my arm before the hair cuts gives me a good idea how the blade will shave.
So I finished with one of the blades and gave it the TPT - seemed OK. Then went to the forearm test. I ran the blade above the skin. Oh No!! I didn't feel any tug at all! Why isn't it cutting hair? I brought the blade up closer to my eyes and there were three arm hairs lying on top. And I didn't feel a thing! I can hardly wait til morning to give this thing a try.
The moral of the story is if you are having trouble with your edges just keep at it. I have no dexterity or hand skills at all and if I can learn this anybody can.Last edited by timj219; 04-12-2012 at 12:46 AM.

Congrats. It's always nice to hear success stories. I remember when I obtained my first good edge and I'm sure you feel the same way. Now fasten your seat belt and get ready for your next level of straight razors, honing, hones and the quest for the ultimate edge! Good luck and be sure to have fun along the way.

Thanked: 4This is my story too. I can get an edge I can shave with, but some are better than others. The last time I honed it, it was kick-ass - really smooth. This time, not quite so much. Definitely an art rather than a science.

LOL the shave was fantastic. Whiskers basically disappeared as soon as I showed them the blade
I finally seem to be at a point where I always get a good edge. And I sometimes get an edge that's in the same ballpark as what I've received from people like Larry at whippeddog or Jarrod at superiorshave. I can see that some day I'll regularly get an edge that compares with theirs as long as I keep at it. And that's great because for months I was convinced I would never get it.
