Default Any Tricks To A SS Razor

I am trying to set the bevel on a stainless steel razor - I am using a 1 K stone. I can't seem to get it hair poping sharp. I am using one thickness of electrical tape on the spine.
Any tricks?? or is just more time???

In my experience SS is no different than Carbon steel to hone other than you might need to do some more strokes.

Try using sets of 20-25 circles with a slight pressure.

I agree stainless is no different. Maybe just a few extra strokes.

I probably wouldn't be worried about hair popping off a 1K. If the bevel looks good I'd move on to the 4K and start worrying about hair popping from that point on.

SS hones the same way, might take a few more strokes.

I don't rely on hair-popping tests to check the bevel. I've never cut an arm hair. I use visual testing with a 10X loupe and a bright study lamp. With that setup, I can check visually to see when the bevels are completely developed all the way to the edge. At that point, all that can be seen is the bevel sides as they move toward and literally disappear in the edge. At this point, the edge is literally invisible, with no light reflecting off it at all. When I can see that, I know the bevel is complete and it is time to move on. At this point, no testing is required. Prior to this I MAY use the TNT to check the bevel, but then it's back to the stone for more work anyway.

    Hi Jeff,

You mention using a 1k stone - but not which one. Some think the Norton is tough to get to pop hair. I haven't had trouble there, but apparently others have. You can check on a wet thumbnail. If it drags all along the edge, a few more lighter strokes should put you ready for the 4k. If in doubt, raise a slurry on the 4k and do some circles and x-strokes before repeating the same recipe on the 4k w/ just clear water. Hair popping should be pretty enthusiastic by that point.

Chosera 1000 is the stone - can anyone point me to a photo of what the edge should look like under the 10x scope?
All thanks - I am learning a lot.
