I've been using Lynn's circle method on the Norton 4k to set a bevel and it worked quite nicely on an older Boker 6/8 King Kutter gifted to me by my barber. The Norton 8k does give a nice edge.
I've also been playing around with a C12k natural as a finisher but I still gotta a hankering to try a Naniwa 12kLast edited by Fender57; 07-04-2012 at 12:27 AM. Reason: spelling

Thanked: 1936To the OP:
Just keep in mind that not all of the "C12K", "Chinastones", "PHIGS", or whatever you want to call them are finishers. I've had several from Woodcraft that actually didn't improve the edge over 8K. I can only imagine the frustrations a new honer would have trying to learn a stone that is supposed to be a 12K stone only to find out it's not as fine as a Norton, Naniwa, or Shapton 8K. You will NEVER hear me recommend a Chinastone/PHIG/C12K. I will bet you a Chinastone...that four out of ten do not improve an 8K sythetic edge. The best $ is on a Naniwa 12K. Then, once you learn a known synthetic finisher like the Naniwa 12K, try a Chinastone. If its any better than the Naniwa 12K, I'll pay for it & you keep the stone. This is called putting your $ where your mouth is.
P.S.: I've made this "bet" quite a few times & I have never had to pay for someone's Chinastone to date.

Congrats on the hone. Very satisfying to hone up a razor and get a good shave. I agree with the Naniwa 12K stone leaving a nice edge.
