Thanked: 522Spyderco UF experience ?
One of the not so popular stones seems to be the Spyderco UF. Has anyone had some positive experience with this stone? I have been experimenting with it and am wondering about the success level with this hone by the members.
I personally have had good results from the UF.

Jerry,
I have used my Spyderco UF for about a year or so now, and have been pleased with the results.
I generally use it as a substrate for some abrasive suspension, mostly 0.5 micron diamond, 0.5 micron CrOx & 0.5 micron cerium oxide. I have tried it both 'normally' and with back-strokes in a strop like fashion. I also use the UF for my 'slurry' experiments.
I use the 'flattest' side of the hone - I tried lapping one side and gave up !!
All in all, I am pleased to have it in my battery of hones, and do look upon it as a modern day barber hone
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ

Thanked: 522Thanks Russ
My best success with the UF comes from using .1 micron iron oxide slurry. This yields a beautifully smooth shave. I have also taken that edge to the Escher with VG results.

I had the Spydercos but had no luck with them and sold them. Robert Williams did an experiment with them and found that diamond spray on a UF worked a treat for him.

The only reason I knew the Spyderco existed was R.William's thread on it - referring to it as a low-cost superhone. This was on his regrettably gone 'Wetshavingworld.com' website. The assessment was given due to its prowess as a platform for abrasive suspensions - as the honorable Phatman points out. The claim that caught my attention was that with a set bevel, diamond spray could bring it to a shaving sharpness in 10 strokes. I tried w/ .5m diamond, and it indeed lopped hairs, though I wouldn't be satisfied as a final finish with it. I've tried w/ CBN (better) and will likely try w/ Linde A. It would seem it serves well, covering the intermediate grit levels well. Perhaps in more practiced hands, it might also finish well. I should note that my testing was not at all extensive - more of a try and see approach.
