Thanked: 8The light shines
Hurray..my Nortons 4/8K arrived. I lapped it and then applied a razor that I could never get shave ready.
I only did a 10 passes on the 8K, paddle stropped with 1 and 0.5 and guess what ?.
I have only been using a 6000 jap stone and wasn't getting anywhere, now I know why you guys rave about a Nortons.
Can't wait for my Corian and pastes to arrive from Handamerican. Scarry sharp system.
I thought my technique was ok but for the life of me I couldn't get that nice feel. The 8k feels very soft and smooth on the edge when honing btw.
How often should I lap the Nortons ?.
Cheers
Gary

Thanked: 346I lap mine whenever I start having trouble getting a sufficient edge. This means hair-popping on the 4k and shave-ready on the 8k.

When you get your scarry sharp system going please update us, I keep being drawn to the system and want some first hand reviews. Especially if you use it with the sandpaper in lieu of your norton. I would think it would cut even faster than the norton. Maybe too fast?

Thanked: 346Ok, then how about this rule:
When in doubt, pencil a grid on the stone and lap. If it didn't need lapping then the pencil marks will disappear after the first figure 8 with no harm done. If it does need lapping then you've solved the problem.

It helps bring dull blades up to par faster. However, I've been satisfied with 1k and the Norton so I won't be getting it any time soon, unless I have $$$ to throw around and no other priorities.

Bill, what I meant to say was that since I already have all the gear I need to get any blade that comes in shave-ready, within a reasonable amount of time, spending money on additional sharpening products would be frivolous for me. The only exception would be the 1000 grit sand-paper which I use for establishing the initial bevel quickly, lapping my hones and restoration work. Therefore, I still stand by my statement as applied in my case.
