The side handle comes in handy while stropping, for honing not so much. Depending on the bevel angle I want to achieve I use a plastic binding bar or tape and finger hone, it's easier this way for me.

I used tape to get the angle the same as the box honing system, and just stuck a whittled down chop stick in the hole

Problem is, the angle of the box hone may not be the same as taped.

I feel as taping the spine, the angle should be slightly more than the angle of it in the box. That way, as using the box in the future, the edge will be hitting the hone. It should be fairly easy to do this with honing, magnification, perhaps a marker test.

But Tom, you have it backwards! if you raise the spine for honing, and then drop it for the box, you will be hitting the top of the bevel, not the edge. It may not matter for stropping, but for the stone portion, you wont see any improvements

I measured the clearance in the box and went slightly less so that using the box strop would hit the edge

I have about twelve Rolls Razors and they shave great. I got a tip from a guy in the U.K. who retro fits the case so that the blade maintains its shave ready sharpness and rarely if even needs to be honed on a whetstone. He gets one micro lapping film, cuts it to the shape of the hone, puts vaseline on the hone and sticks the lapping film to the hone using the vaseline, then when you use the hone the blade is being sharpened at the correct angle and additionally the hone is receiving some protection from the impact of the blade. He also used the original strop past which contains ferric oxide and he swears that it is the best for keeping the Sheffield Steel Rolls blades sharp. You can get ferric oxide powder, put a few drops of baby oil in it, make and paste and put it on the strop. I recently found out that there is a threaded cap on the bottom of the screw type handles which you can unscrew carefully and get access to the metal rod inside the handle and also the spring which holds the rod in place.

Does anyone here restore these? Whether that includes replacing stones and strop, too, or just cleaning up the razor? I picked up an Imperial #2 and I know the strop is beat, but the stone seems to be intact.

The strops pop up every now and then on the Bay, pretty basic set up. I took two and made one good one.
