Want to learn to hone
I want to learn to hone, only been straight shaving since April. I want a good all around hone. Just one for right now but one that will sharpen the razor good enough to shave with. Is there such a hone or do I need to buy a few hones with different grits?

Thanked: 884There might be a good "all around hone" out there. If all you're going to do is refresh the edge on your razor then an 8K, 10K, or 12K, might do the trick.
If you plan to buy more razors, then you'd probably be interested in getting a progression set up like a 1K and 4k/8k combo stone or a set of Naniwa's. Otherwise, you'll spend all week trying to set a bevel with a 12K stone.
Your mileage may vary.

Work over the "Library" section above. Watch the videos, the use the "Advance" search button, above right. Put in key words, this will produce threads that are full of information on this exact topic. There is also a great thread on the Norton 4000/8000.

The Norton 4k/8k is very versatile. Here is a great thread with videos and many great tips: http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...on-2012-a.html Also, where are you located, we have many members and there is a good probability that someone is close by and can help.

Has any one tried the lapping films by 3m by any chance. Would it be cheaper than a 4k/8k stone to get a lapping Film and a glass surface? Also what grit would i need. I'm not doing any restoring just touching up a shave ready razor that is starting to tug a little. I really appreciate all the help I've been given from you guys, thank you

Thanked: 485If you want one hone to touch up a tugging razor, you could go with a Shapton 16k. It'll keep the edge touched up for some time. Long enough for you to save up to get the Norton 4/8. If you're restoring razors, you really also need a lower grit.

Thanked: 2Unless you are planning on major restoration, a Norton 4/8K combination waterstone is all you really need.

Another vote for the Norton 4/8k, it's one fantastic hone.
