New TI Bevel Problem

I get my new Thiers Issard. Comes shave-ready. I shaved and one side shaves better than other, both with some tugging. I tried to set bevel with tape. Hard to tape it because decorated spine. One side gets big hone wear and very unevenly, other side very little bevel, hard to see. It was already like that but gets bigger. Honing strokes feels not flat on the uneven bevel side and like moving hardly. When i close the razor, heel side centered but other half not and toe almost touching to scale. Still trying take some photos but hard to see bevel because lights, it's very shiny blade. I also have microscope without usb. It can be warped blade or rolled edge? This is a problem? Should i keep honing or return it?

Place the blade on a flat surface on each side and you will know if the blade is straight or not. If you are not experienced honer you may consider sending it back and ask the seller to make sure the replacement closes properly between the scales.

Hmmmm, when you say "comes shave ready", do you mean from the company your link points to or did you send it out to be honed? I've dealt with them to buy soaps/creams (not razors) before and I'm pretty sure they only sell 'factory honed' razors and those are not shave ready, at least to my standards.

The problem is, if your razor is only 'factory honed', even if the razor has some sort of warp or other defect, the fact that you honed it, they might not accept to exchange it or give you a refund.

I dont know what your next step would be, contacting them? Sending the razor to a honemeister for appraisal? I'll let others chime in...

It sounds like you know what to expect from a straight razor. If you are not happy, send it back.

Stefan, i placed to stone. I put my finger middle on the spine. Sits nice and flat, only at one side toe little bit looks off from stone to up. If i put 90 degree, edge is straight at all.

Ash, company listing as brand new and shave-ready, honed by company until pass HHT but like you said. It was for my birthday, 8 days left :(

If it were mine I would stop using tape (And I prefer tape) and let the bevel and spine wear in to to the same line and you will wear the spine to a parallel with the bevel. You can do as the guy said but do you have honing experience? Technically what you are going to have to do is fix the spine and the edge to align, but that should not be the case with a brand new razor. IMHO it does not hurt to talk to the seller and see what they say, if you never ask you will never know if you can get an exchange.

I can regularly hone my other razor start to finish, don't have restoring experience. Reading, watching only. I can take advices. But like you said better to find out it's from the shaped spine or not, easy to fix or not. I will talk to seller. I also know another friend have same razor probably from same seller. I can ask him too. Thanks for helps.

At this point I would send it off to Lynn A. or one of the other very fine honmeisters we have here on this site for a full evaluation and honning, Once you get the kinks worked out, you will end up with a very ver fine shaver!!

Other friend said mine was ok at all. When i place to stone and push from cross corners, it movings up and down. When i roll the razor and place other side the blade, it stays flat and solid.

Call one side "A", the other side "B".

Here is the test for a warped blade:

. . . Put side "A" on the stone. When you press on the heel,
. . . and then press on the toe, the razor rocks up and down at the toe.

. . . Put side "B" on the stone. When you press on the heel,
. . . and then press on the toe, the razor doesn't move.
. . . . When you press on the center of the sharp edge, it moves
. . . . . _just a little bit_ downward onto the stone.

If that is how your razor is, _the blade is warped_. It can be honed, but the warp is permanent.

It's a TI -- supposed to be "high class". I would return it.

Thanks Charles. Yes, that is how my razor exactly. I find on a thread another friend was get brand new warped Dovo. I agree. It's brand new, modern produced and TI. I did never expect. My thought tests are must be done before us by factory's quality control. Hard to keep, accept. Hard to send back, get back also. But looks like i will return anyway. I hope they exchange with same model razor. I contact with seller. They are in weekend vacation. I will let you know.

Assuming the stone is flat, and the razor is rocking send it back, especially at the cost of a TI. Taping the blade should not matter. When you look at the tape, is the wear on the tape even? If not, it is an indicator of wapage, tape is or can be for more than protecting the spine, often overlooked.

You might also mention that you posted this thread, should they require modivation, though I hopefully doubt it.

Stone is freshly lapped. I put other surfaces, same results. Like on this video. When you close the razor and look at the edge, warp starts about half the blade. When you look point, almost touching to scales. Maybe touching when opening, closing, when moving sides. Also it's not entry level TI, it's about £248. I did not looked to tape. I will get a reply from seller tomorrow.

No chance left for exchange or honing by someone. Seller accepted to exchange but our customs not allowing send any cutter to another country. Even Fedex said this is a weapon :) You can get, not too hard but you can't send. Never understand customs in the world.
I cut my hand so i will try to hone it later.

Sorry to hear about your problems, and the mad customs law! If by 'the company' you mean the company in the UK that you bought the razor from and not TI, then I am fairly confidant that they do not have someone in-house to hone razors. They just sell them as they get them from TI (or wherever) - in the past, when a customer complained that a razor was not shave-ready the head of the UK company used to get the customer to send the razor to me, and the company paid me direct...

There are several problems I have seen with the newer TI's. Many have uneven flattening of the spine and bevel which can make them not sit flat on a hone. Many also have a wider bevel on the face side than the back side indicative of cutting off a burr when finishing. In addition, most I have seen have a double bevel. The good news is that the TI's are still very nice shavers once you can get the bevel corrected and the razor honed. This can take a little effort though. I normally will stay on a 1K stone until the double bevel is gone and the bevel is corrected along with the razor being able to rest more flat on the stone. Once this is done, the rest of the honing is pretty straight forward.

Today i did marker test. Small bevel side completely removed, on the wide bevel side half way is ok but other half (to end up point) stay marked. On this side if i put my finger on the point, other half contacted with hone too it's completely removed all way. It's not like stretching the steel or applying too much pressure, it's like blade is rolling and sit to stone. Completely sitting with this position. Other side already ok with freehand x stroke. I don't know from blade's shape, uneven bevels or that decorated shaped spine. I don't know also will be ok with honing like this?

Shave was very good. A few times better than how comed to me :) Two passes without ATG and shower still very clean and close. Razor feels heavy. Maybe will be better when i get used to, better technique, little bit more honing...

Honed little more with same strokes and shaved second time. Getting sharp easily. Passed HHT easily. Shaving smoothly and without tugging at all. Very nice :chapeau
