Thread: New TI Bevel Problem

I get my new Thiers Issard. Comes shave-ready. I shaved and one side shaves better than other, both with some tugging. I tried to set bevel with tape. Hard to tape it because decorated spine. One side gets big hone wear and very unevenly, other side very little bevel, hard to see. It was already like that but gets bigger. Honing strokes feels not flat on the uneven bevel side and like moving hardly. When i close the razor, heel side centered but other half not and toe almost touching to scale. Still trying take some photos but hard to see bevel because lights, it's very shiny blade. I also have microscope without usb. It can be warped blade or rolled edge? This is a problem? Should i keep honing or return it?

Place the blade on a flat surface on each side and you will know if the blade is straight or not. If you are not experienced honer you may consider sending it back and ask the seller to make sure the replacement closes properly between the scales.

Hmmmm, when you say "comes shave ready", do you mean from the company your link points to or did you send it out to be honed? I've dealt with them to buy soaps/creams (not razors) before and I'm pretty sure they only sell 'factory honed' razors and those are not shave ready, at least to my standards.

The problem is, if your razor is only 'factory honed', even if the razor has some sort of warp or other defect, the fact that you honed it, they might not accept to exchange it or give you a refund.

I dont know what your next step would be, contacting them? Sending the razor to a honemeister for appraisal? I'll let others chime in...

It sounds like you know what to expect from a straight razor. If you are not happy, send it back.

Stefan, i placed to stone. I put my finger middle on the spine. Sits nice and flat, only at one side toe little bit looks off from stone to up. If i put 90 degree, edge is straight at all.

In the beginning I tried honing with tape but I was continuing to follow a line that was not prallel to the bevel so getting an edge was very difficult. If it were mine I would stop using tape (And I prefer tape) and let the bevel and spine wear in to to the same line and you will wear the spine to a parallel with the bevel. TI finishes on Pasted strops I believe so the angle of the bevel needs to be reset for your stones with a 1K then go up from there.

You can do as the guy said but do you have honing experience? Technically what you are going to have to do is fix the spine and the edge to align, but that should not be the case with a brand new razor. IMHO it does not hurt to talk to the seller and see what they say, if you never ask you will never know if you can get an exchange.

I can regularly hone my other razor start to finish, don't have restoring experience. Reading, watching only. I can take advices. But like you said better to find out it's from the shaped spine or not, easy to fix or not. I will talk to seller. I also know another friend have same razor probably from same seller. I can ask him too. Thanks for helps.

At this point I would send it off to Lynn A. or one of the other very fine honmeisters we have here on this site for a full evaluation and honning, Once you get the kinks worked out, you will end up with a very ver fine shaver!!

Other friend said mine was ok at all. When i place to stone and push from cross corners, it movings up and down. When i roll the razor and place other side the blade, it stays flat and solid.

Call one side "A", the other side "B".

Here is the test for a warped blade:

. . . Put side "A" on the stone. When you press on the heel,
. . . and then press on the toe, the razor rocks up and down at the toe.

. . . Put side "B" on the stone. When you press on the heel,
. . . and then press on the toe, the razor doesn't move.
. . . . When you press on the center of the sharp edge, it moves
. . . . . _just a little bit_ downward onto the stone.

If that is how your razor is, _the blade is warped_. It can be honed, but the warp is permanent.

It's a TI -- supposed to be "high class". I would return it.
