Thanked: 2One stone questions
I did not want to hijack the other thread: http://straightrazorpalace.com/hones...-one-hone.html
I think I have decided on a Norton 4/8k stone. So here are my questions.
Will I see a big difference by adding in a 12k later or just never worry about it?
Is it ok to use the stones that you sharpen your razors with to sharpen other knives/tool?
Thanks for the help.

Thanked: 247As you become proficient at honing, you may see a difference between 8K and 12K. Many will correctly (IMO) state that you should be able to get really good shaving edges from the 8K hone.
Yes, it is fine to sharpen other tools with your hones. Regardless of if you sharpen other tools or not, you will want to make sure your hones are clean and FLAT (every time) before you put a razor on them.

I think a Norton 4k/8k is a great choice for an all around stone and you should take all the time you need to master
the hone before you worry about a 12k. You can get very good shaves off the 8k followed with your strop(s). Many generations straight shaved before hones were even given specific hardness values.Bob

If you learn the 8K well, then the 12K will become more of a want & not a need.
..and everybody wants more hones.
My razor hones are for razors only; no knives touch my 4K, 8K, PHIG, 16K hones, no way in h*ll.
My knives enjoy various Carborundums, 1K, an old beaten Swaty, Arkansas stones, Welch slate & next month I will order another PHIG just for knives.

Thanked: 1587Some of us used to set bevels on and shave straight off the Norton 4/8. So there's no problem from that point of view, it can do the job. I seem to recall some guys pasted CrOx onto their strop if they wanted a smoother edge post 8K.
I've used the Norton with knives, but on a one-off basis. I'd agree that it may be better for your razors if you devote another hone to the knives.

I think a 12k will eventually make a big difference for you. It makes a difference in an already great edge. I've done most of my shaving off 12k the last few months and that makes for a great edge with or without some diamond spray to smooth it out.
I've done some knives on my nortons about a year ago. Then I lapped them and decided I won't touch them with anything but razors again.
