1K just isn't going to produce an edge you want drug across your face. 4k will shave okay but you really don't get to comfort till you get to 8K and beyond.
Look up the JaNorton thread it is the best place to start learning about getting a razor to shave well.
You don't need to use stones for your honing. The 3M micro abrasive film will do a good job and an assortment for learning isn't a large investment. I personally prefer stones but it will cost you about $75 for a 4K/8K or more.

+1 on the Norton 4/8. It's a great stone for a Newby. It's what I have and it works great.
