Dripp,
I was in the same situation as you. You can't go wrong with a naniwa combo 3/8k and the 12k finisher. These stones just seem to work wonders on my razors.
After reading many stories like this, and the main reason why I have never wanted to own a Coti, I would much prefer to stick with my King and Naniwa stones, I just seemed to hit it off straight away with those stones, but I'm certainly up for trying a Welsh natural with a little oil.

Rich your quite right mainly la grise and la grise combo's are being mined. they are acatuly softer than most likely the la grise you tryed. I have tryed 3 and i did'nt get along with them. i did'nt spend bags of time on them . Just realy difficult to get max from them. The only thingh i can think of is there absalutley slow as hell on water ... i struggled and if it was my first coticule i'd of binned them and whipped out a 4k/8k .. The la vainette i have is just total oposite i get shave ready edge with my eyes closed. the newer coticules seem a little differant, i'd recomend getting somthing alittle older , well mined a while ago
Just though i'd menton i have had great results coming of a coticule with light slurry untill the razor is shaving body hair a piece of cake ..then whipped out my 10k naniwa and worked on that with quite athew laps maybe 50/60 and the razor shaved perfectly smooth coming of coti that just lacking should not take more than 10 to 30 laps on 10k naniwa...
60x200 mm is more then enough real estate for a beginner using a coticule.
Shavewares,
No matter what I do, the edges off my coticules (La Verte, La Veinette) rate as slightly less keen than the edges from my 8k Naniwa Superstone.
That is why I always finish a coticule session with a Naniwa 12k - this gives me the edges that I like.
This is a personal thing - others find the edges off their coticules to be sublime.
I am now experimenting with JNats to finish after my coticules.
Have fun :)
Best regards
Russ
Most of the new coticules are overestimated and maybe arent so suitable for razors .As the situation is that the good veins are in moment slightly eploited and 2 or 3 are exploited now, far from the best ones . The prise of razor suitable stone ,goes so hight ,that some people prefer to buy a 2 or 3 symthetics progretion in a place of 1 small stone coticule . We discusse this , that my coti is amazing ta ta ta ra and the most of the new guys ,that are new in straight razor honing ,had big expectations when they buy a big coticule on prise like Suehiro 20 K higher class finishing stone . And when most of the people whatch the videos on you tube and began honing , they discover that there is a catch and it has to be scillfull honer to get edge done on a coticule . If it is an old coti ok but if it is a new one oh man .
'' they say it is the aussome , fastest number 1 stone ,finisher on the planet , and it has to give me better edge that the razor honed buy a pro .
. And when the miracle didnot hapened all the new guys, insteed of been instantly hooked on honing understand the sad truth - that coti is not what everybody said it is on the forums . They began to think - a 1/6 k King ice bear is 40 bucs ,cheap 8 K is from 20 to 40 bucs and C 12 K is 20 bucs so the hole 4 stone progretion ,that is easy and fast is alround 100 dolars They just bought a Best stone for a prise that is compared of a montly payment in some countrys , and they can hone theyre razor on it . There is a catch .
I understand them totaly and i whant to say that it is not good situation , and things have to be said , as they are . Coticules arent easy stones to use , and in the honing process is easy to get back fast as the new honing methods , Dilucot is for midle levell honers .
For entry levell the synthetics are good - back and fourth , back and fourth with litle presure and when the edge begin to bite into the skin move from 1 K to the 6 K 40 sircles and 40 laps and there it is go to the next stone , and after 100 times on the chinese jasper slate ad here it is .
We all have to say the things as they are as we speak abbout coticules and i see grits and statements totaly off this planet .
And when the new guys buy a 300 $ stone Les Latteuses and finds that it didnt work as it has to be working for 300 bucs hone , after 3 days of wondering and honing , they discovered the sad truth of the 1 stone hone . There is aways a catch .
Please dont gudge me for this words i am a big fan of coticules , but theyre not for unexperienced guys .
Just try to get into the skinn of this man and to feel the dissapointment .
