So I honed my first razor the other day and it was great.. than I had read some where that you can clean light rust off a straight with steel wool. So I did that to two razors. Then one I just honed and a new.one... So as you could imagine, the sharpness is long gone on them. So I did a pyramid starting at 20 with a 3/8k stone. It got a little better but I don't want to take more metal off. I'm.going prob send them in. But who thinks that the bevel will need to be reset. Or.do you think they will just need a little more.light.honing?

I think you need to stop ruining perfectly good razors and send them to me for protection!

No, but you can fix those razors. OTOH, maybe you can't "fix stupid"... but you can train it. (Dammit, Fido; stop humping my leg!)

PS: Send 'em out to a pro, for honing.

If you have a 3000 grit stone and the bevels are more or less ok (no nicks) then there is no reason to send it out for honing. You can do that yourself, with a little bit of patience. If it needs honing, then metal needs to come off. Sending it to someone else will not change that fact.

Update.. so I have been honing at the two and the first one.I think.is.close.to shave ready,.I just havebto shave with it first lol. But the other razor has not seen any improvement at.all! It's so.dull you cant.even.get.a.light cut from it! It's like a butter.knife lop

Did you rub the steel wool on the edge? If so then I would say you need to re-set the bevel.

Don't touch the higher grit stones until the bevel is good again.

Give the 3/8k combo hone a couple tries... perhaps a pyramid and if needed repeat.

I doubt you did massive damage and 3k is not so aggressive that you will over do it.

There is a thread and video on honing with the Norton 4/8k combo that would apply
to your hone.... I think the thread was started by gssixgun as was a youtube video
on the same topic.

If after a couple times you cannot get the edge you want send it out.


One rule -- never do anything to your shaver unless you have a second.
Sort of like working on cars. Do not attempt to replace the brakes on
both family cars at the same time. Do one, test, do the second.

That way you always have a ride (shave) to go for parts.

The steel wool was definitely rubbed on the edge. I'm going to see how the one I honed shaves first ( have to wait till Sunday for my hair to grow) and if it okay. I'll prob try to get the other one ( which is the worst of the two) honed. And if all.fails I'll just send them to SRD.

As far as honing videos, I can't.find a lot by gssixgun. Maybe three videos. One was about lapping, another was about a fourty min video and another that I do not recall. Is there more? Because every one says he has videos but that's all I have ever.found from him. Any suggestions to where I can find.more?

I am also doing this on my phone, hence my bad typing.
