    Default First honing attempt

So tried my hand and honing my 6/8th shoulderless dovo today. Actually went rather well. I dont think i spent enough time at the 3000 grit stone before going to 8000. i watched lynn and glens naniwa videos but i guess i got caught up and didnt work it through.

Hardest part seemed to be making sure the naniwas were flat. then 2nd hardest was keeping the blade flat and smooth as i pulled it across the stone.

in any event, after some time at 3k.8k,and 12k i stropped about 25 linen 25 cotton, 50 bridle and 50 steerhide.

it was picking up hairs midway on my arm really nicely...test shave to come tomorrow morning with some new Queen of Charlotte Cayman(Bay Rum) soap and Captains Choice Bay rum AFtershave...

not really asking any questions I guess...just thought i would post up my first honing experience and give a thanks to Glen and Lynn and others for posting videos on how to hone for guys like me.

Yeah, they have helped me immensely. Practice is all that makes it better. However, you did the one thing that makes every new guy nervous, and that's honing my friend. Now you know you can do it, so now you can focus on learning refining your technique.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

yeah ive been shaving with my straights off and on for about 3 years...and with a de for 4...but never tried to hone my own razor.

it wasnt really all that dull but i figured id give it a go anyways...

thinking maybe i should have gotten the 1k and the 5k (along with the 8k and 12k) instead of just the 3k(along with the 8k and 12K)

but i think i just needed to spend more time on the 3k. and do another set of circles along with a few more strokes.
