Default DMT 8" Dia-Sharp® Continuous Diamond Extra Extra Fine stone: good/bad

    I have
noticed on SRD the DMT extra extra fine diamond stone. Being a fan of not
lapping away stones I was wondering if anyone has any pros/cons to this stone.
In theory it seems like a good idea for razor maintenance/ re beveling seeing
how it is a "8000" grit stone, and in theory would not require the
maintenance of a typical water stone. I do realize that theory does not always
translate into practice, so I was humbly wondering if anyone out there uses
this stone and finds it to be advantageous.

Default DMT 8" Dia-Sharp® Continuous Diamond Extra Extra Fine stone: good/bad

I have one (and all the other DMT grits) and have used it for years on knives. I honed a few razors with it and it left a very harsh edge. I will suggest a Norton combo stone will yield better results, cost similar, offer more versatility, and last a user a lifetime (if you are honing for yourself only).

As a guy that has both I suggest the Norton for razors.

It is not really a 8k hone in any way, but if you treat it like a 5k hone on steroids, than its a nice stone. It leaves a more rough edge than a real 8k, but the scrathes can be cleared with a 8k waterstone or a fast synth finisher, or a natural with slurry. I have bought 2 or three, but endd up selling them eventually, and stayed with the 4/8k Norton and the nanis. The 8k DMT is a nice stone imo, if you know where to put it in a progression.

FYI, this stone is measured in MESH not GRIT. So if you were to measure the abrasive particles they would be closer to 4000 grit. It would not leave a smooth, shave ready edge similar to that produced by a waterstone. I imagine that the edge would be quite rough.

If you are looking for a one stone solution, then this isn't going to be it. Take the above posters advice and look at waterstones.

For those who use an Extra Extra Fine DMT for honing razors, when do you know your razor's had enough of this DMT, so when it's time to switch to a finer stone ? For instance, are you all capable of shaving arm hair using this stone ?

If you refer to the DMTEE 3 micron stone, than yes, it will shave arm hair easily. With a bit of crox it will shave too, but not too smoothly.

    Hi Jeness,

    Thanks !
A further question: will it also shave arm hair during the break-in period ?

Break it in with a kitchen knife or something, it takes a few minutes only. I don't know if it will shave arm hair if not broken in, but it should if the surface is not really rough.
