Thanked: 0hone service in california?
hello all, im new to straight razors, very excited... maybe too excited... before i found all of your threads i had my new razor honed at a knife shop
.. so now im looking for it to be done properly. im in central cali (modesto) but frequent the bay area. i found a place in l.a. called the sharpening shack, but im worried as it seems to maybe be a bit more on the knife side of things when it comes to sharpening... ive tried searching and looking around but with no luck.
appreciate the responses...

Thanked: 1195Welcome to SRP.
I believe Classic Shaving is based in California, they offer a honing service. You could also try the members map to see if any SRP members live close by.
EDIT - apparently Classic's honer is in Michigan, not California. I'd check within CA first....

Thanked: 270I'm going to put a suggestion in the hopper, that you learn to hone your own razors. That's a decision I made, that if I were going to pursue the straight shaving hobby, I was going to do it myself. In the beginning I put off the decision by going to the Classifieds section and buying a couple of shave ready razors, but finally I said that this can't go on forever.
Get the World of Straight Razor Shaving DVD. World Of Straight Razor DVD - Straight Razor Place Classifieds. The reason I suggested it is that it took the fear out of ruining my razor. I watched someone with a lot of straight shaving experience do it, and it looked like something I could do. I don't do it exactly like Lynn does as I've gained two years experience and moved on to Shapton hones, but the DVD's invaluable in giving you confidence in tackling all phases of straight razor shaving and maintenance. It costs approximately the same as one hone job.
An alternative suggestion is to go to the Member Services section of the Classifieds here: Member Services - Straight Razor Place Classifieds. These artisans are hooked on straight razor shaving and maintenance. A honed blade from them shows you how it's supposed to feel on your face.
BTW, I had family living in Modesto for about 25 years, so I've been there a few times.

Thanked: 0thanks for the replys guy, ive already had a couple of members pm me, so i sent it off today. i do plan to do my own honing in the future but at this point its just not in my budget, but i figure by the end of next year ill be set up, and have sent it out maybe a few times that ill have a bit of a feel for what it should be feeling like.
