I'm guessing they were able to do a thumbnail test without doing much damage. The next steps were probably all worked up by stropping anyway. I agree with jimmy about them wanting razors that weren't to intense.

The thumbnail test when done carefully will not damage the edge. Fingernails like hair are made of keratin; they are just an adapted form of hair. Barbers are professionals and know what they are doing. We are amateurs.
