Thanked: 10Did I screw it up??
I recently got my first straight razor, A TI Grelot.. after a looong waiting of about 8 months... When shaved for the fisrt time I noticed that the razor was pulling a lot.. I lapped my nani 12k and made about 200 strokes... with no presure and taking care of every single stroke and then stropped it... The bevel is mirror polished now... and I am now able to make the HHT without a problem.. My third shave was very pleasant and I am now falling in love with the blade... My question is ,,, as the naniwa 12k is a finishing stone,, is there a danger of giving too many strokes and dulling the blade with it??? did I overhone the blade?
thank you allLast edited by ledemon; 01-08-2013 at 02:29 AM.

Thanked: 43If it shaves well for you then you are fine. 200 laps is a bit much unless it was really dull. Usually start with 50 laps when it starts pulling and that should get you back to where you need to be.

I guess you really like to hone!
Get some cheap razors to practice your honing on, to get the feeling for your hone and how it behaves.
Practice makes perfect and when it's time for a touch up on the Le Grelot it will be easier.
I'm a sucker for Le Grelot razors, got a few and they are all superb shavers!

From my personal expierence I can tell that well prepared TI with good stroping start performing better with the time. I think stropping make them smoother.

200 strokes was probably a bit excessive, but hey....it worked!! If I'm doing a touch up on my Nani 12k, I'll usually do like 20-30 X-strokes & that brings the blade back up to tip top shape...

Naniwa 12k is a good stone, I dont know if it needed 200 strokes or not, but that is irrelevant if it shaves well. Good job IMO.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
