Most professionals I have seen here said all they used was the Norton 4k/8k for years and got a great shave off of the 8k for years as it was all they used. I too have gotten very good shaves off of the 8k. If you do want to invest in a stone I suggest the Norton. It is two stones in one, not very expensive, and you can do anything on it from bevel set to finishing.

Yup, you can definitely do everything you need to do with the Norton 4K/8K. Don't believe us? Check out this thread

A good finisher used properly should give you a smoother shave. But shaving straight off the 8K will tell you what you need to know about your technique. And frankly if you aren't nailing your edge on the 8K, a finisher won't help you much. 10Pups is, I think, taking a very smart approach to this honing thing.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 57Do not get the chopped Cnat stone. Cnat stones are difficult to master at best, and a lopped off one, even harder. Send your razor out to a pro for the first time and then get the Norton 4/8K stone. That's all you'll need to get started. Then later after you've mastered the 4/8K stone, you can get a finishing stone. For right now, you only need the Norton 4/8K.
