Bevels are just all over the place,, Honestly some take me 3 minutes, others 3 days same technique and same stones..

I really like the TNT for the First indicator, it not only is accurate it also smooths up the edge, once I get a good TNT then I hone about 10 more perfect light X's and go for a solid AHT.. If I get both I am gone

I see the validity in the TNT (thumb nail test) for razors that have suspect uniformity. When a razor has a big smile or slight warping etc, this is beneficial to see if your technique is going to do the job properly on the razor in question. If you can pass this test through the length of the blade, continue with the same style stroke until like glen said, you can pass the arm hair test. There are also visual ques that will assist you in setting your bevel and i found (for me) that a jewelers loupe was of great assistance when first learning how to hone.

just make sure you can shave hair at skin level and you do not need any tests. I personally use a scope and that is all I need to know when the bevel is set.
I think you should be able to calibrate a TPT pretty easy too.

I do two tests when setting the bevel. First, if there's any little nicks or chips in the edge, I hone them out so the bevel is nice and clean. The second and final test I do is the TPT. Once the edge bites my thumb the whole length of the blade, I am ready to move on.
