This sounds like you have a warped blade & your stroke is not making full contact. Marker test may help.

For some reason that I can't explain, honing with slurry seems to work right to the bevel shoulder, yet when swapping to water alone I notice the edge polishes first. Look closely with magnification to see if this may be happening also.

    The question
What would you advise me to focus on when improving my edges? In my unexperienced opinion, I do not dilute too quickly and I try to keep an even touch. I have great difficulty applying very light pressure and when I do, I slip up at times, keeping the razor at an angle which makes it touch the hone's (chamfered) edge. I read that can set me back a number of strokes, but I don't know how many.
Make sure that chamfered edge is well smooth. The touch & angles will come a few more razors down the track if you keep trying.

Thanks for the advice! I will play around with the marker test next time it's on the hone.

As you said, the edge does polish first. I ordered a jeweler's loupe which should arrive tomorrow that will help me see some more detail.
