    Default Thuringen Stone

I have been playing (about 25 razors) with the Thuringen that I got from Tony and it is a pretty nice stone. I have been experimenting in comparing the edges using it along with my Coticule, an Escher, a Chinese, a slate (the Ebay one), a 12K stone, a Czek stone, a Primble barber hone and even the 8K side of the Norton. The Thuringen has a nice glassy feel to it and takes a slurry from both the Nagura of the same stone I got from Tony and from a Nagura I got from JapanWoodworker. This stone creates a little more drag than my Coticule, but produces very similar striation patterns to the Coticule. Actually of all the stones in comparison, it is closest to the Coticule. I gots to get one of those picture taking microscopes....... I would like to build this stone up by placing a 1/2 to 1 inch piece of slate under it. I even did some circles with this stone followed by some X patterns on a couple of razors and it produced a very crisp and sharply defined bevel and edge.

All in all, a nice stone and a good value.

Thanks for taking the time to do an extended test, Lynn. Even I'm tempted to get one and I'm trying to be more pragmatic about straights these days lol.

Great info, Lynn. The stones sounds mighty impressive if their that close to a coticule. How would you rate their speed though? Are they a fast or slow working stone?

Speed is actually pretty close to the Coticule. I stuck to mainly a 10 stroke regime with it and it worked fine. Wouldn't do more than 15 strokes probably unless Damascus. Had a little more friction/drag in the draw than the Coticule but just noticable.

    Lynn,

It would be very interesting to hear on the other hones as well, something like a table comparison for the help files would be great!

I guess your results coincide with what I remember reading about them: similar in abilities to the coticule (but of a geological make-up closer to the Escher)

    Cheers

I can attest to what Lynn said about not doing more than 15 passes with the Thuringen. The first razor I honed with the Thuringen I received from Tony I did 20 passes. Result: I over honed the blade and had to take corrective action (per Lynn's DVD). From now on, no more than 10 passes on it. I learned my lesson. The stone, however is great. It sparkles with garnets. I'm glad I bought one.
