Thanked: 2Reminded again that I'm a newbie!
Dear Fellow Members-Tried the pyramid method on several of my blades using the Norton 4K/8K. Thought that I was shave ready, as the blades (save for the Golden Monkey) were cutting hair. Tried shaving with two and realized that this was NOT the case. Webt back to SRP and looked up some of the basics again and discovered that I was UNDERHONING. Good grief! Did not realize that a stroke was up AND back-dohhh! Right up there with stropping too hard and improperly using the Naniwa 12k!
Anyway, I went back with my newfound knowledge and now have MUCH sharper blades! This really is a synergistic effort, as all it takes is one piece missing from the whole and you have a substandard shave! Thankfully, my honing style is MUCh better and I have finally learned how to lap my Norton 4K/8K with my DMT D8C! Still learning though-Gearhead

Sounds like your processing in the right direction, well done.
I personally am still learning as well and only dabble in it from time to time.

Thanked: 2Dear Ratbag and fellow Razorheads-If you saw how little body hair I have left and how many knicks and scars my face has suffered, you would appreciate my effort It is MUCH easier for me to understand now why Gillette safety razors were so welcomed by men when they came out. It has been a steep learning curve for me and if not for Sham, Max, Lynn, Gssixgun, Star Shaving and this forum I would not have progressed as far as I have! Thankfully, there are still reasonably priced vintage razors on Ebay that can be brought back to life with a little TLC! I could NOT afford this hobby if all of my blades were new, THAT is for certain. Great forum!-Gearhead

Thanked: 1184The things I wished I would have asked my Grandpas when they were alive.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 2Actually, I would not have learned much from my one gramps, as I discovered his Rolls shaving set and inherited a nice Gillette safety razor from the 1930's-Gearhead222

I have been honing for about 3 years now, just my own razors, wouldn't have the nerve to try to hone for some one else at this point, sometimes I feel i'm a genius and a lot of other times I know I"m a clod!!!
But I enjoy shaving with a razor that I honed my self, even if the sharpest razors I have at present are my 3 Gold Dollar Str8's!!!
Just honed a Rolls Razor blade won't know until later on if I did good or need to go back to the Norton 220 again and start over.
Thems the breaks mates, just keep on truckin'!!!
