Thanked: 0Two Questions - Lapping & Barber's Hones
I've got 2 quick questions.
Is the frequency of lapping the same for the Norton 4/8K versus a stone that requires making a slurry, such as a Belgium or Thuringen?
When using a typical barber's hone do you have to soak it before using it, make a slurry, or only wet it with water and no slurry?
Thanks.

These are typically harder than a water stone, so should require lapping less often.
When using the typical barbers hone nothing need be done, use it dry if you want to but some type of lubricant is probably a good idea. Wetting the stone with water is a good idea, some others and I use lather instead of plain water. These do not make a slurry.

Thanked: 2209The Norton 4/8 with require more frequent lapping because it is a softer stone and you will use it more.
The barber hones ( if ceramic and non porous) can be used dry or wetted with water, lather, dish soap extra fine oil etc.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin
