Is this razor worth honing?
A guy I work with is interested in starting shaving with straights. I told him I would I find him a razor if he would get a strop and brush. I dug through my junk box and found a razor I forgot about. Will this hone up, or is the edge too close to the stabilizer? I will hit it with some polish, but it is going to be scaled in something simple if it is worth honing. He doesn't need fancy.

Looks good to me. Worse comes to worse I think Glen has posted something about taking a little off the stabilizer if necessary. I'd try it as is before I went through all that if it was mine.

Thanked: 247The stabilizer might slow you down, but it can be honed. Worth it? Well that's relative to how you value your time.
But I'm pretty sure you've ground complete razors out of blank pieces of steel before. This should be a cake walk.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I'll try to knock out some scales today and get it honed up real quick. I think I'm going to do black G10 with red G-10 liners and nickel silver pins, or maybe stained maple scales and CA finish.

Thanked: 2591You can reshape the heel area on a DMT to lift the stabilizer a bit then you should have no issues honing the razor

Thanked: 43Looks doable to me too.
I doubt the stabilizer will give you too much trouble.
