Experienced honers please take a look!
Hey all,
I currently got a "ALOXITE CARBORUNDUM NIAGRA FALLS" barbers hone which some say is around 6k grit. I also just got a "Chinese 12k stone" as well from "The Whipped Dog". Do you think the combo of these two stones/hones could be used to maintain an edge for 6 months to a year? Any suggestions are welcome because I'm pretty new to the "Art".Thanks!

Definitive answer, AFAIC, is maybe and maybe not. It depends on the edge you're starting out with and on your skill level. Also I personally don't know either of the stones. Assuming it is shaving well for you now, try touching it up on the 12k if stropping isn't getting it for you. If the 12k doesn't get it try the Niagara falls ....... NIAGRARA Falls !!! ........ Slowly I turned ....... (just kidding) sorry, couldn't resist.

Thanked: 116Usually progressions go 1 4 8 12. Try the '6' then the '12' and see what happens

Thanks guys! All good stuff! I got a "Dovo Best" from "Straight Razor Designs" that came very sharp and is still good. When I felt like I wanted more of an advanced blade I got a few on eBay. I got a Krusius Brothers and a Dubhl Duck that are not terribly dull but could use a touch up. I for sure will go 6k then 12k, but for the Dovo ill only use the 12k if it starts to tug. One thing I've learned when it comes to Straight Razors is a little goes a long way.

Thanked: 4249The "Aloxite" is a barbers hone and is used to maintain a shaving edge with just a few strokes, probably not the best choice for a progression, that said your Chinese 12k with a light stroke will definately maintain an edge for a very long time.

This is a critical pc of info: The honorable Hirlau has a great post about ebay/antique store blades to learn honing on. As one fine member learned this last Saturday - even the blades that look pristine can hid alot of work that requires restorative grinding before you can really hone.
