Is this a good hone?
This is one I found from a well-known site in our part of the world. Would you buy it?

I asked the same question some time ago: http://straightrazorpalace.com/showt...highlight=apex

Thanks for that. So, basically don't bother!
Any other UK-based places to get a good hone from? Not looking to buy straight away (pun not intended!) but would be nice to have a few URLs or whatever...

I couldn't find any info on APEX readily on the internet. (Is that because the company is "unknown" or lack of skill by the researcher?
)
Second, I'd be concerned what the grit rating would be -- is it high enough to provide a clean, polished edge (apparently 6K is about as low as suggested to get an acceptable edge without feeling coarse or harsh)?

How about this one? It's not a water one, but oil. Plus it's dirt cheap so I am even more sceptical!

Not enough info!
All the description tells you is that it's about 8"x2"x1" thick. You need to know the grit size to get a feel for whether or not it's suitable for razors. Lots of people say the stones they're selling are good for razors but that's often just opinion.

Here they are: http://www.apex-schleifmittel.de/english/content.htm
It's a German company, but the above link gives you info in English.

Cool, thanks pea. I take it you mean from this exact page?

They don't look too bad price-wise, etc. Which model did you get? - the 8000 and 10000 ones are classed 'polishing' ones. Do I need a 'fine' one as well?Last edited by rum; 01-16-2007 at 11:39 AM.
