Thread: wavy bevels and wedges

Do you guys find that it's harder to get an even bevel on a wedge? I have three wedges, one sharpened by a honemeister, and all three have wavy bevels. None of my hollows do, so I'm wondering.

I think I have a wedge from Joe which shaves well and has a nice bevel. Most of my other wedges shave well (for me) but do have uneven wavy bevels. I always thought it's a function of the quality (precision) of the grind and honing ability.

Maybe there's a vintage TI wedge with a nice bevel - need to check on this when I get home.

I only have one wedge which is a DD Satin Wedge and it has a very even bevel but then again though technically its a wedge its kind of wimpy for a wedge.

Probably the reason for wavy edges is because most traditional wedges need so much honing because of the amount of metal you have to remove and the more time on the hone the more of a chance to kind of mess up the bevel. Also many wedges are really old and in those days the tools used to manufacture them might not have been the best.

i have a 6/8 Wade n Butcher wedge. it has a bit of a wavy bevel on it also. but man its sharp as all can be.
