    Default Smiling blades

Hey all, I have a razor with a slight smile to it. Now I know I can fix this with a rolling x stroke but as I'm new to honing I think that that is beyond my knowledge as of now. So I'm wondering, is it possible for me to drag the edge across my dmt 325 until it evens up? I know that I'll obviously lose metal but is this possible to do? I really want to get the basics down first before I try something advanced like a rolling X stroke. However, if you guys feel that that is not too advanced I will try it out, I just need to find out where I can see a diagram or a video of how it is done I couldn't find any but one on YouTube of Lynn.
Any and all responses are very much appreciated!
    Best regards,
    Tony

Take it to the meet and learn to hone it properly. A smile is a feature that improves the shave; you'd lose that, extra steel, and the proper geometry of the blade.

You know I forgot about the meet, that's a great idea- thanks for bringing it up. In all honesty didn't want to lose the smile because I think it can improve my shaves by getting into places in my neck where I wouldn't normally be able to get into so I'll leave it as is until June 9th. Thanks Holli.

It could be done though right? Dragging it across the 325?

I agree with Dylan, learn how to hone with the smile So many old blades have a smile to them anyway so its something you'll come across time and time again.

What you're talking about doing is bread-knifing a blade and I'd really really recommend not doing that.

Even with big old chipped wedges you can still hone them to a shaving edge without bread-knifing. Thats a pretty serious technique to go for and it has the potential to mess up your edge geometry as well.

It can be done but TBH the best approach is to learn how to hone a smiling blade and get your edge that way.

Its also the best way to repair edges too

Good luck and keep us posted!

I'm not a honing expert eigher, but I would surely not take the smile out of the razor. Wait until the exerts wake up, but I don't see that it should be that hard, if You try carefully.

Here's a video from Lynn on rolling x-stokes.

You can make it a tooth pic if you really wanted to, but the point is a smile is something that is there for a reason and is not a defect, or hindrance.
You have to correct a frown for good shave, you will get bad shave if you remove a smile.

Thanks for the advice I'm going to try to start studying up on the Rolling X stroke and try myself and if I can't do it then the meets in two weeks or 3 weeks so that's not too bad I can wait till then for someone to show me how to do it properly!
Thanks again guys I really appreciate it!

I am looking at the wiki and it really doesn't seem that hard to do, I may try it out- I have nothing to lose- if I screw it up then I can fix it at the meet. I think that if I take it really slow and watch what I'm doing I may be able to pull it off it's good to learn anyway! Thanks for all the responses guys.
