If you are new to honing, my first guess is a problem at bevel set, unless you have a really fast finisher & managed to overhone into a burr at finish stage or used too much pressure for the same result.

I don't think it's the bevel- though it was a wedge and it took longer to set, I eventually got to and shaved off of the 8k- I'm just getting the same results off of the next level up. I mean obviously I could be wrong but the bevel is popping hairs and I did get a shave and it is close enough for DFS, everything else seems to click except for the smoothness factor.

What is you next level up? the Jnat ? If you did everything perfectly & the planets have aligned & nothing changes, you may simply be at the limits of that particular razor or, worse case scenario the stone is no better than an 8k, but that's not likely.
IMHO, the number of brilliant shaving wedges out there are balanced by a lot of ordinary shaving wedges especially the ones that rust has taken a hold of at some point.

I seriously doubt I did everything perfectly! I'd like to think I'm getting the gist of it though, but I believe that it's just what you and mainaman have been saying- I just have to keep experimenting until it clicks. My first starting point is to try finishing with the proper nagura, and I'll go from there. Again, thank you guys for the responses and the guidance! I only wish I didn't have to wait two days to test shave again! I have the beard growth of a 12 year old boy....

Just some final thoughts. Did you shave off the 12k ?
Do you use a loupe etc ? Can you see anything at the edge in the form of chips or shiny bits ?
If you feel the sharpness is not up to snuff ie tugging . You could go back to 4k & 8k.

Yep I use a loupe to check the bevel and no chips and the bevel looks almost like a mirror!

Actually my next level was the 12k naniwa ss and THEN the jnat which I kinda hoped was like a 16kish stone. I should have test shaved again after the 12k...
