Thanked: 2Honing / Finishing
Over recent weeks I have come to the point where I can now hone an Ebay razor from a poor condition to quite a good shaver. In fact I am shaving with two Ebay straights that have seen better days as I want to develop my skills more before doing any honing on my good razors. The next step in this process is finishing, certain elements of which have me confused.
Using pastes it is just a matter of moving to progressively finer pastes, such as 1, .5 & .25 however I am not sure how many laps on each would be safe for a carbon or stainless razor.
If a Thuringen was added to the mix where would it fit in, in relation to the above mentioned pastes?
If a Thuringen was used what initial honing and pasting would be recommended for a TI or a Friodur (I have a NOS friodur) and then what would be a recommended guide for touch ups of these razors.
Thanks
Terry

I think doing 10 laps on each of the pastes is the general recommendation. Maybe a few more for the Friodur. I remember seeing (though I don't have the time to look it up) a chart that compared pastes to grit and putting 1m at about 15k grit, .5m at 30 grit and .25m at 60,000 grit. So if you use the Thuringen you'd probably replace the 1m and maybe the .5m as well.
For what its worth I've read that Lynn doesn't use 1m as a finisher.

Terry, it really depends on the individual razor and it's something that you have to experiment with. As long as you're getting consistent great-shaving results, you don't need to change your touchup routine.
