Norton Flattening Stone
Has anyone used the Norton flattening stone, and if so, any opinions are appreciated. I have a Norton 4k/8k, but the necessary materials are in short/no supply here in a remote corner of Kuwait. I was considering purchasing the NFS from Amazon, because the wet/dry sandpaper and granite tiles/glass panes aren't exactly in abundance here, and those that have are a little stingy (with good cause though). Any suggestions are appreciated.

jimmyman,
The NFS has received mixed reviews here. Some people see it as unnecessary, because sandpaper is cheap and works well.
I'm considering buying it because I hone a lot of razors and thus need to flatten my Nortons somewhat regularly. It seems like it would be simpler and less messy.
I have read that it leaves a rougher surface that needs to be polished with higher-grit sandpaper anyway, so it may not be worth it...
For what it's worth, Lynn recommends it on his DVD.

I like mine - I follow up with a fine DMT diamond hone that 's about 1k grit.

I am a total newbie, so what is a DMT diamond hone? And another question, is this an absolutely necessary purchase right now? As the Norton stone I recently aquired is absolutely brand spanking new, is there any need to flatten it? It seems awfully flat right now, and I haven't exactly put it throught enough use (or any use yet for that matter) to see the need to flatten it. Any suggestions?
Also, what is the necessity for putting bevels on the edges?Last edited by jimmyman; 02-03-2007 at 06:35 PM.
