i was exactly in same boat as you are. i have never own one. i wanted have it and always a little higher price then i afford it. This one wasn't so bad as i saw it i just click to buy it now. When i get to know and have a little more knowledge about them i am sure i can be helpful.

I am certainly not knowledgeable in this area - have relied on JimR and OLD_SCHOOL to supply me with some nice japanese razors, however I would take a wild guess that if the razor is in fact from the 40's you should be happy with it. I would still be interested to hear what someone knowledgeable says about my time-based theory, and also who made it.

The box lid reads, I think:
優 yuu, subereru - superior, excel

    X (can't read)

    製 bessei - special make

    御 o - honorific

    合 ukeai - guarantee, contract

    刀 kamisori - Japanese razor

    The razor itself:
    工乃 ?

    X (can't read)
塲 ba, jou - field, part of a name?

    別 tokubetsu - special

今 (variant of 請合?) ukeai - guarantee

The four large characters inside the box:

床 toko - bed, tatami, but '床屋' tokoya means barber(shop)
向 muke - directed towards, suitability
    -> together: 'for barbers' use'?

    刀 kamisori, Japanese razor

The three smaller kanji below that:
品製特 tokuseihin (read from right to left) - specially made article, custom

Wow, that's really pretty. Impressive, too, that only 9 visitors saw the page before you bought it.
