Hunting knife with gut hook sharpening
Hey does anyone know of a good sharpener/hone set that I can use for honing a gut hook Damascus steel hunting knife (or I guess any serrated blade with good steel). I'm wanting to get the hook to be able run like a hot knife through butter when my brother in law takes the knife out to the woods

Thanked: 3Hello. I made a gut hook into a bayonet once with a grinder and finished the gut hook with a chain saw file. It works great for my purpose, which was to cut fishing line etc. from around my SCUBA tank while spearfishing. It will open some fish up good also. I have never tried it on a deer or elk or anything, but the point is, the chainsaw file worked great for sharpening the hook.

This is right up my alley, lol. Since I have to sharpen ours at work all the time. The idea should be the same for a serrated knife and the gut hook, the best thing I have ever used is a product that Gatco made. It is a set of thin ceramic sticks than are stuck in a block of wood. Is the blade cut on both sides or is it single sided?
Here just a few that would work depending on the size of the gut hook.

Ceramic files. Spyderco make them.

If that is the case then the ceramic will work like a dream and will make it sharp as all #$%& and not a lot of work. A word from someone how cuts a lot of meat send the ceramic with him because it may dull fast on the hide.

Went to the local knife store (smoky mountain knife works) and found some DMT dia-fold serrated knife sharpeners. I picked up the 600 and 1200 grit versions (25μ and 9μ respectively). They look perfect for any job. I would love to get the 3μ version soon.

A useful trick to sharpen a guthook in the field is a few lengths of 1x30 aluminum oxide belts cut to length and then folded width wise.use it to keen your gut hooks edge.it adds little weight to a hunt pack.
