Thread: Archery Broadhead Schools of Thought

For your bowhunters out there I got a few questions for you.

1. What type of edge do you prefer: serrated or smooth?

2. What type of bevel do you prefer: single bevel or double?

3. And for you honers out there, how sharp do you like them?

4. Finally is there something called "too sharp"?

For me these is my answers:

1. Smooth. Better penetration from smooth cutting rather than ripping. Plus I think ripping causes the clotting factors in the prey's blood to kick up quicker than with a smooth scalpel cut

2. Single Bevel. Creates a slight corkscrew effect once penetration begins

3. I don't know hoping to get answers from you guys. Right now the thought the lowest angle that keeps the edge throughout its job without edge failure. But still looking for that edge.

4. So far No.

Smooth double bevel and although I do hone I buy new. I would never loose a broadhead that was not for practice a second time at an animal. No. I do not think broadheads can be too sharp. Razors yes. Broadheads no.

Okay I know nothing, but if I was going out to kill I think I would start with these.

Definitely smooth, I want to slice, not tear. As for bevel, make mine double. There is no such thing as too sharp (until you slice yourself).

1. Slightly serrated. See #3 below.
2. Double bevel.
3. Sharpness between 600 to 1500 mesh. (Is my idea of slightly serrated.)
4. Instead of "too sharp", I would say that too small an included angle (where the bevels meet) is possible.

As a historical note, Fred Bear often used the edge from a small pocket file on his arrowheads. He once sold small pocket files for that purpose.

I shoot slick trick standards, penetration is outstanding replacement blades are fairly cheap. I personally would steer clear of Single bevel and double bevel broadheads just because of they're inherent tuning quarks. If it's single piece you're after go with VPA or G5. Accuracy with an arrow is far paramount to anything else in my opinion. Doesn't matter what you hit it with if you get the lungs or the heart.

With the slick tricks I don't bother sharpening them, just throw on a new set of blades and go. When I shot G5 I would touch them up with something in the 2-5k range
