    Default Sheffield

We live and learn. I didn't know until today that Sheffield makes knives. I found them when searching the smokey mountain knive works web site. Now I just about know these blades may not be in the same play ground as our old razors but I thought i'd say something about it in case anyone want to look.

Yes, Sheffield cutlery is pretty common to find up here. There is a fair smattering of German, Finnish and US made hunting knives too.

I always suspected "Cutlers to his Majesties" meant knives and such and bought the first W&B carving set I saw. I also have a Greaves adze. Got a real deal on that I guess so only one in the set so far, but I keep watching.

There are a lot of wood working tools that come from there, chisels, planes and the like.

I have some current production cabinet scrapers that were made in Sheffield.

Sheffield is synonymous with steel and good quality steel. When I was young every piece of cutlery in my house was Sheffield, now it's all cheap imports.
Incidentally the Sheffield ice hockey team are called the Steelers and their football/soccer team are nicknamed the blades

Sheffield had a lively import market of Bowie type knives to the USA in the old frontier days when the mountain men were exploring the areas west of the Rockies. Extended into the 'old west' and later as well. Pretty collectible knives.

LOL - was just looking at one earlier, but no way it would make it into Canada, very nice looking Bowie knife:
