Thanked: 26Any leather sheath makers out there?
Hey folks,
I recently made a leather sheath for a Stainless steel Mora, turned out pretty nice and i enjoyed the crafting of it so i decided to up my game and make a nice scout carry bushcraft sheath for my Enzo Trapper.
All is coming along nicely so far with the Trapper sheath, However.... After wet forming the entry to fit the scales (done in saran warp) and removing the knife, i left it a few more day while working on other stuff, this time as the leather was totally dry i left the knife inside the half made sheath.
When i came back to it a day or two later i noticed some speckles on the blade and went researching for a possible culprit.. I ended up reading about tannins in the leather being corrosive to carbon steel and this got me thinking.
I know more and more knife makers are using Kydex these days but in the past knife sheaths have traditionally been leather or wood or both, i am wondering about the treatment of the inner of a leather sheath that would reduce the corrosive effects on carbon steel.
At the minute im wondering if an application of Sno-Seal might help, as thats going on the outer sheath anyway it means i dont have to go shopping but have also been reading up on Ballistol.
any thoughts or advice?
thanks
P.S. thought it might be nice to drop a picture in here of the Mora sheath and the WIP sheath for the Trapper.
the envelope was the best white background i had to hand heheheLast edited by stev; 03-11-2016 at 10:43 PM.

Thanked: 26Think i found the answer, found some nice thick but flexible plastic in work, i think its gonna get a plastic liner glued inside at the area where the blade would touch the leather.
