Ignore my last post. Here is what I'm carrying now. This is small carry knife from ML Knives. The blade is about 2 3/4" and the handle about 3". The steel is 1095 and Matt left an aged pattern. The scales are cherry. The fit and finish is perfect. Matt is a pleasure to deal with and his prices are extremely reasonable.

...and the straight-point Kephart. 4" blade; 3/16" thick and curly maple scales. I can't get over how solid this feels in-hand.

I carry a smaller victorinox Swiss army knife mostof the time but I have a few cheaper folders I carry from time to time. I'm looking for a decent folder now, any recommendations for a decent folder under $100 ir so? A place by me sells Cold Steel and I like the Recon 1, any opinions?

Thanked: 44Under $100? There are literally hundreds of folders that fit those parameters. I recommend looking at SpyderCo and Benchmade.

Yeah, you'll need to be a bit more specific in what you're looking for in a knife than just price.
What kind of size are you looking for? Any favourite materials? ColdSteel, Benchmade, Spyderco, Buck, Böker and Kershaw for instance. Are all the bigger brands that have LOADS of options under $100.

Thanked: 983Depends on the task at hand really, but this is what was at hand in less then a minute at my place. This was taken some time ago and there have been a few additions to this pile that reside in a bedroom cupboard. Many more scattered around the house in places where they get regular use. EDC is, as I wrote in an ealier post, one leatherman and one O.T Stockman. I will one day place all my knives in one spot and take a photo of them...Might scare myself though.

Wasn't looking for a specific model recommendation, just some brands. Lolling for a 3.5-4" folder, something I can punch through sheet metal(last resort) would be great, so tanto point I guess would be best for that. Any big brands to stay away from?

Thanked: 44Normally, I would say Cold Steel, but you want a tanto point.
They just look too tacticoolish to me, and in Canada, your knife gets taken away if the cop thinks you're carrying it for self defense.

Yep, without a substantial handguard, I don't think I'd be trying to punch through a car door.
For under $100, I think the Spyderco Manix 2 is a great value. It's a lot of blade with a robust build. Good ergos (for me anyway) and grippy jimping. It's also US made. I like the lock too.

Ultra Strong, Tanto point, 3-4" folder? Cold Steel San Mai III is exactly what you are looking for.
Hmmm, looks like the Recon is the closest they have now. I don't think they make San Mai III steel anymore. Shame.
Correction. They still have San Mai III steel but you have to search for it on their web site. It's not on the mail pages anymore. The blades are made in 3 layers. Ultra hard in the middle sandwiched between springier steel. This means a very nice edge that can resist breakage.Last edited by Crotalus; 02-10-2012 at 07:41 PM.
