Thread: Looking for some decent pocket knives

Ok.. so I am already looking for Christmas gifts for next year. The past 2 we have had a no buy clause for adults which seems to never truly happen since the parents still end up buying stuff for us. I am looking to pick up some decent folding pocket knives for my Father, Father in law, brother, and brother in law for next year. The only stipulation SWMBO has put on me is try to keep it under 50 bucks per knife. The only other consideration I have is in Michigan it is technically illegal to carry any type of A/O or other knife with any type of assist unless you are one armed.

I have read through the EDC thread and the knife collectors threads but just wondering what people would think of a decent pocket knife I can get or are there a few to choose from so I can better match the knife to the person?

The Buck 110 is a classic knife and can be found for less than 50. There is also the SpyderCo Tenacious or Persistence if you want one-handed.

I've been carrying a Case XX 61048 for many years and highly recommend it. Old style but can be easily opened between thumb and forefinger and won't wear a hole in your pocket. Great blade profile for cutting apples, peaches, tomatoes ..... for self defense too if you're so inclined. Here is a link.

Kershaw and Gerber make some fine pocket knives, many of which are under $50.

Are you looking for wood, bone, horn or synthetic scales... Traditional folder or other, 1,2,3 blade...???

I have several that I like... Buck Stockman, Buck Solo...

There are several brands that I'd like to pick up but I have no need at this time... I can only carry a few at a time...

Case, Buck, Hen & Rooster, Schrade, Kissing Crane & Bear & Son... You really can't go wrong with any of these brands...

I'd look at the knives that are above $15.00 for the smaller style, but no more that $40-$50 for the larger (Stockman Style) with 3 blades... IMO..

I have several Spyderco folders that I like. Note: i haven't tried the made in China ones yet.

These from Taylor's Eye Witness are nice traditional Sheffield knives. Might be a bit pricey by the time they're shipped over.


White Handle

Here are some of the Case 61048 and 62048 that I have collected, not carried, over the years. The tang stamps are slightly different based on the time of manufacture, from the 1920s through the 1950s. They are still making a good knife but not quite as nice as the old ones.

Those are very nice knives Jimmy. I may look into a case as I believe I can find those locally without needing to get any online.

I have seen the spyderco's and have considered getting one of their Byrd series as well. I may have to get quite a few knives to "test" before getting them for everyone else

As for handle material it really does not matter as long as the knife is solid.

Has anyone any experience with the Smith & Wesson knives? My brother commented on them the last time we were out and saw them and they seem to get decent reviews from what I can find.. but they may be mainly paid ones.

I got the SpyderCo Tenacious G-10 recently. A cheaper knife for sure but it is solid and seems to be of a good enough quality for a daily carry. To say it is a cheaper knife I only mean in comparison to some of their other blades. It is well put together, has single hand operation, a great textured grip and a decent blade.
