    Default Sandpaper Sharpening

    Hey guys,

I was wondering about sandpaper sharpening for knives. I am going to the hardware store and was wondering if I should get 3 or 4 different grits of sandpaper to put a real fine edge on my knives. I just found these knives a few days ago in my apartment but they have not been sharpened for about a year so they are fairly dull. So anyone who has sharpened knives by this method any recommendations?

    Thanks,

    MGNero

    Hello,

I've used sandpaper for my knives several times works well if the knives are in good shape. that is with a good bevel already present otherwise i go to a grindstone. I used wet-dry 320-400-600-1000k and then maybe 2000k sandpaper. The difficult part is keeping the right angle for the blade, not like straight razors with a built in guide. I got mine to pop hairs off my arm but that's as far as i could get sandpaper to go in making an edge. Keeping it wet (water/WD40) and clamped helped me out.

I finish my knives with a 6k stone. and then strop on cardboard. Though once I get and 8k or 12k stone for honing my razor I will probably use it for that.

Do you have any hones that you use on your razors? That would be my suggestion. If you want truly sharp knives I would check out the dvd's by Murry Carter:
Amazon.com: Murray Carter Introduction to Knife Sharpening DVD: Home Improvement
Amazon.com: Murray Carter Advanced Sharpening Techniques DVD: Home Improvement

He is a master knife smith who learned his trade in Japan studying the techniques of the Katina makers. This guy really knows what he's talking about. Here is his website: Welcome to Carter Cutlery | Carter Cutlery

At the end he dry shaves his couple month old beard with a knife he just roofed his house with! Of course he sharpens it during the video while demonstrating the techniques.

His ideas may even help you with your razor honing!
