Not to mention air quality no-burn days getting in the way. I don't know what San Jose ordinances are like now, but San Mateo County does not like wood burners.

In high school I had a buddy who earned beer money by wood poaching in the wildlife preserve on the Pacific coastal range near Woodside and Mountain View. He'd take his '57 Ford F100 four-wheeling into the forest, cut up standing dead or intact fallen oak and madrone, split it with a hydraulic splitter at his house, and make a killing on the market because of how well aged the stuff was. I was always amazed that he never got caught by the rangers, as I imagine he would have spent some time in jail for that--but I didn't mind drinking the beer it bought. Don't know why I just told that story, but I guess the Bay Area and madrone brought me back.

Actually wood harvesting in this local was allowed after a big storm came thru the santa cruz mtns.
You could only take downed, tagged trees.
We would scour the areas around loma preita for madrone and haul log portions home to be made into cord wood.
Even in the early 70s we were getting $100.00/cord,great money at the time.

Very random but I ended up finding a 3 line swaty today and remembering what jimmy said I had to pick it up and see if it does anything.

    Time to test it out.

I saw one of these at the antique store two weeks ago. I had never seen one.

    Hey Guys,
I was about to open an "Axes & Hatchets" thread, then realized that Basil had already done it.
So let's bump this thread,,,,& if Basil does not care, we can add hatchets in it too.

I've wanted to get a GOOD axe for several years now, but have never been quite willing to pull the trigger on a Gransfors. I've also been doing a bit of blacksmithing lately, and because of that I stumbled onto the Adirondack Folk School's site, looking at their blacksmithing courses. So now (and this is the kind of decision making that goes a long way to explain my financial situation...) rather than paying the $130 or so for the Gransfors I want at Lee Valley, I am hoping that the folk school will offer their camp axe-making course again next year so I can spend $210 + accommodation + Gas etc instead of $130 to make my own.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.
