Not to mention air quality no-burn days getting in the way. I don't know what San Jose ordinances are like now, but San Mateo County does not like wood burners.

In high school I had a buddy who earned beer money by wood poaching in the wildlife preserve on the Pacific coastal range near Woodside and Mountain View. He'd take his '57 Ford F100 four-wheeling into the forest, cut up standing dead or intact fallen oak and madrone, split it with a hydraulic splitter at his house, and make a killing on the market because of how well aged the stuff was. I was always amazed that he never got caught by the rangers, as I imagine he would have spent some time in jail for that--but I didn't mind drinking the beer it bought. Don't know why I just told that story, but I guess the Bay Area and madrone brought me back.
