Thread: Another Custom Knife

Hi All-Some of you may remember my proud/excited post about my youngest son's entry into custom knife-making here:

He just finished up his second knife today. I'm not sure what you would call this style, but it is going to be his general fishing/outdoor knife. It's in 1095 steel with a false edge on top, an integral thong hole, and black linen micarta handle with perimeter pins; it has a nice heft and balance. It buffed up very nicely, I think, and took a wicked edge that easily shaves arm hair.


So the next step is the workshop we're having built next Tuesday, and moving in the tools and machinery I bought from another (deceased) knifemaker right after. He should be up and running in his own shop soon after that. Instead of bagging groceries, his summer job is going to be making and (hopefully) selling his custom knives. I think I'm more excited about this than he is! Thanks for looking-Aaron

P.S.: His mentor Ross Tyser is working on a damascus straight, and my son has shown an interest in that as well. Hopefully I'll be able to post a str8 in the near future!

That looks great, your son should be very proud of his creations.

I have never seen a knife with perimeter pins in the handle, is there a particular reason or benefit with this style?

Thats wonderfull,instill in your son that being a tradesman is nobel work.

I'm no expert but that really looks good to me. The design looks both beautiful and functional. The young man has a really good eye for the art of the thing.

Thanks for the feedback all-Hirlau, I'm not sure of any structural/design reason for the perimeter pins, but my son's mentor suggested them when helping him execute his design. I'm not sure how well it shows in the crappy iphone pics, but they look really good with the polished black micarta.

Yes, they do look good & I'm sure it gives him more practice on pinning.

To reiterate,as a very young man I was building custom hardwood doors,back in the late 60s some sold for 600/800 bux.
than the need to get educated came along,I went to med school,I did well for 40 yrs.But I always wanted to make doors and stuff with my hands.
I was never happy being a proffesional type person.
Your son has a gift,I hope he persues it,Jesus was a carpenter.nothin wrong with that.
