Welcome to the forum...patience is key with this; you'll get the hang of it quicker than you think.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Welcome to SRP.
I also started on a shavette and quickly jumped to a straight razor. Don't rush it and enjoy the shaves. You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.

Welcome to SRP!
I did exactly what you are describing... I just cut the DE blade in half lengthwise, and it worked fine."Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. That one is Obsession." -Roland Deschain of Gilead

A quick answer to your question is yes... and no. As crouton976 mentioned above, splitting your favorite DE blade in half and using one half in the shavette is the way to go. However, the smoothness of the shave will depend on your shaving technique.
Shavettes tend to be more aggressive and less forgiving than straight razors because of the fine and very sharp blade edge on the shavette. The shave may feel smooth or rough, depending on the shave angle used. I remember cutting my face a lot while learning on the shavette. You will find that shaving with the shavette gets easier as you shave with the same blade during the week, so don't use a fresh blade for every shave. A fresh 1/2 DE blade in a shavette is sharp and aggressive. As you go through multiple shaves and the blade gets "dull", your shave will feel smoother and easier.
Oh, and watch out for the pointy blade edges; they can give you a big sting if they poke your neck while shaving. It's part of the learning process. You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.
