Wink Good morning from Rochester, NY!

    Greetings.

I started using a Dovo Shavette about 4 months ago. I like the control and close shave that it gets, but would like to break into the world of "real" straight razor shaving.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any stores in Western NY (say between Syracuse and Buffalo) where straight razors and/or strops could be purchased?

I would also be interested if anyone knew of any antique stores that carry straight razors.

I know there is an art of shaving now in the area... but their selection is limited, I am a bit worried about their razors being "shave ready", and would rather support a local business.

Thanks, I look forward to getting an even closer shave!

Welcome Patrick - Historically you are at the epicenter of one of the finest American made razors. The Robeson Cutlery Co. was based in Rochester and made some very fine razors. There are several members from your area who may be able to help you in your search for local antique stores. But, be warned, not everyone is willing to share their favorite "fishing hole". Remember to keep an eye on the razors sold in the classifieds by members of this forum. You can buy an excellent vintage razor that is guaranteed shave ready, sometimes at a bargain price. You may not be supporting a "local business", but you are supporting your fellow straight razor shavers. And make sure you get a decent strop and learn to properly maintain your razor or you won't have a "shave ready" edge for long. Again, welcome, and don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have to assist you in getting a good start in straight razor shaving.

    Regards - Walt

    Welcome to SRP!

Walt brings up a good point about your location. In fact, not just Rochester, but many places in New York were known for making GREAT razors, the most notable being the Geneva Cutlery Company (Genco for short), which at one time was the largest factory in the world for producing straight razors. Not to mention that they were of good quality, albeit a no frills sort of good quality.

Another recommendation on a vendor would be Straight Razor Designs. They are a sponsor of this site, and Lynn Abrams, who founded SRP, does all of their honing. In fact, all razors are honed by him before shipping, and are assuredly shave ready. Their strops are also highly praised as well.

Good luck, and welcome to the fold!
